此套幻灯片由美国汉学家费正清与海肖尔教授搜集整理。这组幻灯片的主要内容是费正清与海肖尔教授为哈佛大学本科生开设的近代东亚文化课(俗称:稻田课)的教学幻灯片。此套共八百三十九幅黑白和手工上色照片,基本都为清末民初时期的中国老照片,现藏于哈佛大学图书馆。
据说费正清教授上课时,语调干枯,毫无表情,往往开门见山,不加任何废话。他在哈佛第一次开《东亚文化》全校选修课时,放的第一张幻灯片是中国的稻田,然后他不动声色地说:“女士们,先生们,这是一块稻田,这是一头水牛……” 学生们因此把他的课叫作 “稻田课”。可这个 “枯燥” 的课却成为哈佛有史以来持续最久的课程之一。

约翰·金·费尔班克(英语:John King Fairbank,1907 年 5 月 24 日-1991 年 9 月 14 日),汉名费正清,美国汉学家、历史学家,哈佛大学教授,哈佛大学东亚研究中心的创始人。
埃德温·奥德法特·赖孝和(英语:Edwin Oldfather Reischauer,1910 年 10 月 15 日-1990 年 9 月 1 日),又译作赖世和/海肖尔 [2],美国历史学家和外交家,1961 年至 1966 年任美国驻日本大使,是美国公认的日本问题专家。他还与美国人乔治·M·马科恩在 1937 年合作发展了韩语的拉丁化方法马科恩-赖肖尔表记法,在欧美国家广为使用,并成为韩国的官方罗马正写法,主要用于地图和手语。
